Located in a hilly forest of tall, ancient redwoods which shade out much of the sunlight and drip constantly with water down to the forest floor below, this small, dark town is partially abandoned. Once a booming mining town known for its magical black opals, Ravenswood’s elegant houses are now mostly boarded up, ever since the mines were shut down because of a deadly poison gas filling the tunnels.  

Almost no outsiders realize how dangerous mining for the black opals really was, back when the mines were open. Those digging for the gems were sometimes driven mad by “whispers that come from deep within the earth”. The deeper underground the tunnels reached, the more common this affliction became for workers. Many miners exhibited the madness by attacking their fellows, or cutting their veins to “feed” the opals with their blood–and the gems soaked up every last drop, even if the madman was drained dry. Few know what feeding the stones does, but as there is no cure for the affliction, the miners swear a pact that should they succumb, their friends must kill them before they do something terrible. 

What few remember about Ravenswood is that, over a hundred years ago, locals in this area had dangerous magical powers passed down through their bloodlines, known as Elder Blood. It allowed them to create rifts in reality, travel between dimensions, and move things with their minds. Often, it called strange monsters known as Immitators from other planes of existence to hunt the users of this power. An innate gift, Elder Blood was hard to control, and required lots of training so as to not be a danger to its user and everyone around them… 

Will your players uncover the source of the horrors in Ravenswood, and put an end to it? Or will they succumb to its dark temptations, making the same choice the original settlers of the town made?
